Laboratory Oven: Guidelines on Using an Oven in a Lab

Laboratory ovens are common pieces of equipment in most laboratories and they are used in high-forced volume thermal convection applications and provide uniform heating throughout. They are used in a variety of applications including drying glassware/sample drying/melting.

While using, precautions must be taken to prevent material overheating, the production of harmful airborne pollutants, combustion&explosion. They are simple to use but the protocols&safety measures we're going to go through must be followed constantly to keep your laboratory oven in good working order. These precautions keep the workplace safe from fire&health risks.

Precautions to consider when using ovens:

·        -> Place your oven in a clean, indoor, away from moisture to avoid corrosion.

·        -> Check the oven before each use to make sure it's in decent working order. Examine the cable and outlet for any signs of wear&tear. Ensure that all temperature sensing systems are correctly mounted and capable of shutting down the power if becomes too hot.

·       ->  Workers who run lab ovens must be familiar with how they function.

·       ->  Test oven calibration regularly to ensure that the temperature read-out is correct.

·        -> Choose the right oven for the job. Avoid using an oven with a temperature that is considerably higher than the maximum comfortable working temperature.

·      ->  Avoid storing flammable products near ovens like plastics&paper as they may start a fire.

·        -> Ensure that no toxic gases are generated during the heating process, if so, the oven must be connected to an authorized ventilation system.

·        ->Take care when opening hot ovens, stand to one side while opening it.

·        ->When you're finished heating your samples turn off the machine before opening the door. Never actually touch the samples with your fingertips, wear padded gloves.
